CAMERON COUNTY TO HOST GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FOR
OLD ALICE ROAD EXPANSION PROJECT

Cameron County will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the Old Alice Road Expansion Project on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Papaya Drive and Old Alice Road in Los Fresnos, Texas. The project, undertaken in coordination with federal, state, and local partners, will reconstruct approximately 4.88 miles of existing two-lane rural roadway into a four-lane urban roadway featuring a center left-turn lane, shoulders, and sidewalks.

Construction is anticipated to begin in September 2026, with completion expected by May 2028.

The Old Alice Road Expansion Project will improve connectivity between Brownsville and the Los Fresnos area while increasing roadway capacity and improving safety and mobility for motorists. The project will also reconstruct and repave the portion of Old Alice Road adjacent to the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center, improving access for Sheriff’s Office personnel and emergency response vehicles traveling to and from the facility.

“I’m pleased to see this massive project moving forward,” said Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. “This nearly five-mile roadway project will help improve traffic flow and connectivity for those traveling to the Los Fresnos area and beyond. Its completion will mark a significant step forward in strengthening Cameron County’s transportation network and supporting the continued growth of our community.”

“The Old Alice Road Expansion Project is a monumental step forward for Cameron County and a testament to what we can accomplish when our local, regional, state, and federal partners work together,” said Commissioner David A. Garza. “The collaboration between Cameron County, the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority, the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Texas Department of Transportation, and the City of Brownsville demonstrates our shared commitment to addressing the mobility concerns of our residents and investing in the infrastructure our growing communities need.”

The construction contract amount is $31,305,092. Engineering design services are being provided by RRP Consulting Engineers, with IOC Company serving as the construction contractor.
