Working at TxDOT is a family affair

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Employees often describe their coworkers as family, but that is the reality for several San Angelo crews who work alongside their own relatives every day.

Across the area, seven families have built careers together, serving travelers in West Central Texas while strengthening bonds both on and off the job. From one generation to the next, these families share a commitment to serving Texans.

  • In the Big Lake maintenance office, Geovanna Carrasco works alongside her brother, Isaiah Carrasco.
  • In the Sterling City maintenance office, Betsy Tanner works alongside her nephews, Vance Davis and Tye Caldwell
  • In the Robert Lee maintenance office, John Simmons works alongside his grandson, Landon Haddock.
  • In the Eden maintenance office, Jose Lozano works alongside his son, Moses Lozano.
  • In the Sonora maintenance office, George Noriega works alongside his nephew, Robert Zook.
  • In District Special Jobs, Evan Morron works alongside his nephew, Danny Kasner.
  • In the Robert Lee maintenance office, Amanda Wagner works alongside her daughter, Jayla Corley, while Chris Wagner, who works in district maintenance, is also part of the family tradition.

For these families, their shared workplace has given them the opportunity to spend more time together while keeping Texas roads safe.

Working together creates opportunities that extend beyond the job itself. Experienced employees can share their knowledge and mentor the next generation, while younger family members gain a greater appreciation for the dedication and service that define a career at TxDOT.

For John Simmons, one of the most rewarding parts of the experience has been watching his grandson, Landon, grow both professionally and personally.

"I enjoy watching him grow, working with new people, and learning about safety. Especially that," Simmons said. "I'm hoping he'll stay with TxDOT and explore the other opportunities it has to offer."
